2015 AAC Spouses Luncheon

Chef Andreas Proisl, CPEC desserts.

The Spouses Lunch is the last event we photographed at the 2015 AAC / ACF National Convention. The Luncheon was held at the very exclusive Isleworth Country Club located just outside Orlando. I always look forward to the Spouses Lunch. After running around covering the Gala Dinner the lunch is a breadth of fresh air. The country club is a beautiful space inside and outside situated on a lake. When I got home from the last visit to Isleworth I wished I had taken more exterior photos. Of course when I arrived this time it was raining. It rained pretty much the whole time we were in Orlando.

The Country Club is known for having for the amazing desserts created by pastry chef Andreas Proisl. Chef Porisl created a beautiful dessert station in the atrium just off of the banquet room where the guests were seated. The Continue reading »

2015 AAC Gala Dinner

Tito's Vodka Ice Bar at 2015 AAC Gala Dinner

Tito’s Vodka Ice Bar at 2015 AAC Gala Dinner

Photographing the AAC’s Gala Dinner is our biggest challenge during their National Convention. The Gala Dinner is the same day as the Fellows Meeting and it is held offsite. This year the dinner was held at the Waldorf Astoria Disney World which is just a short drive from the Marriot where we were staying. We needed to be ready by 5:30 PM for group shots with the dinner scheduled to end at midnight.
The staff at the Waldorf were really great to work with.
We use three camera / flash setups for the Gala Dinner. We have studio flashes setup in the front corner of the ballroom with the AAC signage for posed shots we trigger the flashes with Pocket Wizards. For the presentations on the stage we have one portable flash set up to left of the stage for fill light and a nice big Nikon SB-910 on the camera for our main light. We use the Nikon Creative Light System to meter and trigger the flashes. We can also take the flash off the camera and use it handheld with the camera’s built in flash controlling it. This gives us some options to add a little variety to the images. The third setup is for the food shots. We setup a soft box that we Continue reading »

2015 AAC Fellows Meeting

2015 AAC Fellows MeetingWe were in Orlando, FL covering the American Academy of Chefs (AAC) national convention. The AAC is the honor society of the American Culinary Federation (ACF). This is our sixth year covering the convention. The convention moves to a different city each year, however this is the second year that we have covered it at the Marriot Hotel in Orlando, FL. The ACF / AAC headquarters is located in Saint Augustine, FL so it makes it convenient for them to be able to do the event close to home every few years. We covered  three events for the AAC this year, Their annual Fellows Meeting, The Gala Dinner, and the Spouses Luncheon. The Gala Dinner and Spouses Luncheon are traditionally held offsite from the location of the convention.
The first event we covered is The Fellows Meeting. The meeting is broken down into two parts with short break in between. We cover the Continue reading »

Lillian’s 100th Birthday Celebration

It was an honor to photograph centenarian Lillian Richards and her family for Lillian’s 100th Birthday Celebration. Lillian will officially turn 100 on April 3, 2015. The Richards are a great family and Lillian is quite an amazing lady in fine health for her age. The celebration was held at Wesley Manor in Ocean City with Mayor Jay A. Gillian on hand to present Lillian with a proclamation from the city. It was quite moving to hear each of her four children recap each of the 25 year periods of her life.

Kansas City, MO

I travelled to Kansas City, MO to cover the American Academy of Chefs (AAC) annual convention. The convention moves to a different city every year and Kansas city was the host chapter this year. This is the fifth year I covered the AAC Convention. Covering the AAC events gives me the opportunity to visit cities that are not on my list of places to see. I always enjoy visiting new places.
Kansas City, MO is a medium size city with the population spread out over a large geographical area. Continue reading »
